What I Made Wednesday- Apple Cinnamon Pancake Syrup
I've decided to start participating in What I Made Wednesdays from This Wasn't in the Plan and this week's entry is apple cinnamon pancake syrup.
I hate wasting anything, so I make this every year with the apple peels from my yearly apple pies, sauces and crisps. It's very simple and very cheap, especially if you have an abundance of apples. It's simple one part brown sugar to one part water (I usually use two cups sugar and two cups water per batch), a few handfuls of apple peels, plus cinnamon and vanilla to taste. While it's cooking the house smells like heaven.
This batch is going to a friend as a birthday gift, but I think I'm going to package some smaller jars to put in my gift baskets at Christmas.

What a brilliant way to use apple peels! We'll be doing this, I'm sure! I'm planning a trip to a local organic farm so we can pick our own apples later this month... can't wait!!

ReplyDeleteOk, I've never made syrup before. How long do you cook it, and at what temp? And can you give any idea as to how much cinnamon and vanilla? And any other details that can help someone who is eager to learn but knows little?

I don't keep close track of how long I cook it, but it's probably 5 minutes or so. You want to make sure all of the sugar is dissolved. If you have a candy thermometer some of them have a marking at the correct temperature for syrup. That would work too.
ReplyDeleteFor the cinnamon, I'd guess maybe 1/2 a teaspoon to a teaspoon depending on how cinnamony you like things and I'd go with a teaspoon of vanilla to start.
